Examples of the Mason's Art in Jerusalem The plans, elevations and history of Jerusalem's Mamluk buildings were recorded and published as part of the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem's Architectural Survey. However, in the view of Dr Archie Walls, the architect who began the Survey and lead it from 1968 to 1975, it is simply insufficient to measure a great monument in the hope of understanding it and that it is necessary to thoroughly scrutinise a building's details to truly appreciate it and the skills and ideas of the craftsman who built it. In the lecture a number of examples will be illustrated where the study of stone details reveal intriguing insights into design processes of that time. |
