The church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem is one of Christianity's most sacred shrines, and recent discoveries have shed new light on its history.

In this volume there is discussion of the early periods of the site, including the topography of the quarry from the time of Jesus, the evidence for the Temple of Venus, built by Hadrian c.AD 133, and the Emperor Constantine's magnificent Basilica of the Holy Cross with its related buildings.

Some of the discoveries have sparked scholarly controversy, in particular the so-called 'Jerusalem ship', a drawing of an ancient sea-going vessel with the words Domine Ivimus beneath it. The authors' view is that the drawing has a second-century pagan provenance.
