The Aleppo Museum contains a very fine display of the wonderful basalt
orthostats, relief sculptures and statues from the Iron Age Aramaean
city-states of Syria.
Of particular interest are some of the relief sculptures from the temple at ‘Ain Dara and some splendid examples of free-standing sculpture from Tell Halaf. From a closer examination of the material, it is also possible to appreciate some of the internal complexities of Syrian archaeology and the shifting zones of cultural influences through the ages
